Does Your Ministry Need a Leadership Board?

An effective leadership board can help take your ministry to new heights. But not all boards function well, and an ineffective board can be like a ball and chain around a ministry leader’s neck.

Can’t your nonprofit or ministry just dispense with having a board altogether? No, and here’s why.

Nonprofit ministries receive billions of dollars each year in public money. This Raise Your Vision | Does Your Ministry Need a Leadership Boardmoney takes many forms, including government grants and donations from companies, foundations, and private individuals. In fact, more than 70 percent of all money going to nonprofit groups in the U.S. comes from private individuals just like you.

Because ministries are entrusted with so much public money, U.S. law requires that each nonprofit organization establish a board of directors (sometimes called a church council or elder board) to ensure good stewardship of the money donated to it.

U.S. law requires that each nonprofit organization establish a board of directors.

Think of your leadership board as the owners of a company. Like owners of a company, board members govern the organization, carry out fiscal responsibilities, and determine policies that guide and support the organization.

However, unlike the owners of a company, board members are volunteers. They serve without salaries, and they don’t benefit financially from the organization. Because board members don’t receive a salary or share of the profits, they can put the needs of the ministry first. Developing a board that handles those responsibilities effectively is well worth the effort.
